Here are some of the projects that Lauren is involved in currently.
lauren and calum
A close-knit duo of wooden flute and fiddle. Calum Stewart is the leading wooden flute player of his generation and they first collaborated on his solo album ‘Earlywood’. Their new duo album ‘Wooden Flute and Fiddle‘ showcases their own tune-writing and arrangements of old tunes, Lauren using various tunings and also playing viola.
(Scots - 1. noun - an energetic dance or its tune; 2.verb - to make merry, to frolic)
RANT is the meeting of 4 of Scotland’s finest fiddle players, two from the Shetland Islands and two from the Highlands. Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Sarah-Jane Summers and Lauren MacColl join forces to create a sound rich and vibrant, evocative of the exciting scene they create music in. They made their debut performance in July 2012, storming onto the scene immediately earning themselves high praise, “delightful… a quartet which should enrich both the traditional and classical music scenes in future” (Northings.com, live review). Using just their fiddles, they weave a tapestry of melodies, textures, layers and sounds.
Known for their work as soloists and with various bands, this is a celebration of the instrument they all have a passion for. 4 fiddles: one beautiful sound!
Acoustic four-piece Salt House is the meeting of four distinct musical minds on the Scottish scene. Their highly current sound is earthy, deep-rooted, yet eagerly progressive, built from grassroots folk with contemporary influences.
‘The MacCollective’ is Lauren’s solo project, alongside Mhairi Hall (Piano) and Barry ‘Spad’ Reid (Guitar). Within this project Lauren has explored and researched old material from her native Highlands, and written melodies for the trio. For their most recent gigs have been joined by the fantastic box player Shona Kipling. “The sound they created was at times ethereal and at others foot-stampingly riotous.” The Herald ***** Lauren also gigs in a duo with Mhairi and has given solo recitals at fiddle festivals across the country.
Lauren tours regularly with acclaimed singer/harpist Rachel Newton since appearing in her New Voices commission for Celtic Connection Festival in Jan 2014. She has recorded on albums by Blue Rose Code, Julie Fowlis, Calum Stewart, Siobhan Miller, Concerto Caledonia, Ewan McLennan, Rachel Newton, Chloe Matharu, and a session for Disney’s Pixar animation ‘Brave’ in a dream-team fiddle section. She was part of the inaugural performance and recording by the True North Orchestra, and in 2016 the first performance by the ‘Strathspey and Surreal’ ensemble.
